Martin O'Gorman

Martin O'Gorman

Marty died of a brain tumor in June 2017. He was divorced. The Thai family he lived with had a traditional Thai funeral. His sons had him cremated and the ashes sent to them. A year later, they scattered his ashes in Hawaii from an outrigger canoe. - contributed by Patti (Hern) Murphy

Marty came to FA Day by way of Louisiana. Don't recall the back story. He was a great running back at Day and NNHS. But not full of himself. Shy, modest, friendly. Just a really good guy. Sorry he has left us. He was a good friend.  I had traced him to an Ironman in Hawaii before I stopped looking. Till Patti told me he had passed. RIP Marty....

From Hoover's yearbook....above. Thanks, Helen

It’s very difficult to find the right words that belong here. Marty sat next to me for three years in homeroom. We had met the previous year at Albermarle field for the championship game of the junior high schools. He made Day the winner that day. He scored the only touchdown.

He was always a winner and I felt privileged to stand well inside his shadow. It would be untrue to say he was my “protector”, but bad things never seemed to happen when Marty was around. It’s impossible to pick out any specifics over three years because they were three solid years of good. We both dreamed of riding motorcycles off into the sunset. He ended up in the surf of Oahu and I actually got to take those motorcycle rides, often with him in mind.

He was just an admirable guy, especially for a high schooler in the early 60s.
