Jimmy Rice first lived in Newton Corner after moving here from AZ.  He went to Our Lady's grade school, but would play baseball all summer at Farlow and Burr Park.  Later he moved to Newtonville and transfered to NHS where I only saw him once in awhile.  What I most remember about him as a kid was he loved baseball, AZ, his two younger sisters and his wonderful smile.

Jimmy died 1968 in Viet Nam serving his country and protecting all of us.  Last year when I visited "the wall" in DC I took a picture of his name and wished we were still playing baseball all summer at the park.

Thank you Jimmy for being such a good kid and giving your life.

I met Jim my senior year in NHS, but we became closer at Newton Jr College.

I wanted to try out for NJC's baseball team, but lacked the self confidence

to do so on my own.  Jim said he'd try out with me.  As it turned out, we both

made the team.  I went on to BU and Jim joined the Marines, following a family

tradition of military service.  While he served in Vietnam, we corresponded and

I became aware of his sensitive and poetic side.  He was killed during the 13th month

of his tour.  My friend was taken way too  soon.
