In Memory

Lynell Cleveland (Colon)

Commnet from John Allen:

"

Lyn Cleveland Colon: January 1,1947, November 3, 2020

Lyn Cleveland Colon died last night at 9 PM EST. She had been in failing health for several years but especially in the last two years. It is also sad to learn that her daughter, Maria, died of cancer five days ago from cancer that had been diagnosed just six weeks ago. Lyn is survived by her son and three grandchildren.

Lyn faced more challenges than she deserved, but she dealt with them the best she could and gave more to the world than she took. Finding herself a single mother with poor job prospects, she went back to school and ended up as a Hospice nurse caring for dying patients.

Somehow last week it occurred to me to call her to check up on things. She was already in the hospital and her phone did not answer. I kept trying every day until her son happened to be in her house when I called again yesterday and answered. If I hadn't tried, who knows when I would have found out.

I have known Lyn and her family since 1949, as long as I can remember. The Allens and the Clevelands became more like relative than neighbors. We first lived a few houses away in Auburndale square. When we moved to larger houses in 1954, we both ended up a few houses away on Central Street. Like most of us after high school, Lyn and I went in different directions and different places. We didn't speak very often and saw each other even less. I could always count on a Christmas card. When she came to the 50th Reunion, she did not look well. It took all her determination to be there. I knew we wouldn't see her again.

She was a good person."

Lyn Cleveland, John Allen, and I were "Besties" from the age of 3.  We all lived a couple houses apart in Auburndale and spent our playtime together.  Our group also included Astrida Zemgals who lived at the Auburndale Women's Club, (later known as the Turtle Lane Playhouse).   The 4 of us "owned" the alleyway that ran between our houses, where we all learned to ride our tricycles and play "Jack and the Beanstalk".

Lyn made it to the 50th Reunion and was so very happy to see everyone.

She leaves a son and lost a daughter earlier.

RIP Lyn, we will miss you. broken heart

I'm so sorry to learn of Lyn's' death. I remember her so well from Auburndale. She lived up the street from Lisa Lavely, who was my bestie in those days, so we saw each other often. She did suffer more challenges than most but handled them with grace. RIP, Lyn

I am glad that Lynell & I conncected at the 50th. We had wonderful conversations & corresponded for a while. Amazing what two people can have in common, but never know until 50 years later. I am sorry to hear of her death. Thanks for posting. Carmen
