Great coach with a strong work ethic and sense of humor that was hidden to most.

Mr. Fortune was a great role model for me. He and Mr Jessup were partially responsible for me getting into physical education and coaching.  I learned a lot from both but especially Mr. Fortune.  I kept in touch with him a bit and saw him when he was pricipal at Barnstable High School, again at a Hyannis Mets baseball game and again in downtown Hyannis.  Great guy.

REGARDING the passing away of Coach Alvin Fortune, being a 'line-man, it was not my privilege to be under his training and supervision.  But to come out onto the field, whether it was 'for a GAME,; or, especially, just for an ordinary practice, it was always a helpful, uplifting inspiration to see him standing there in his grey 'sweats,' baseball cap and a whistle on a lanyard around his neck.  He was always the picture of someone who was "in shape."

He 'exuded' victory, and I drew strength from him at all times.

Wasn't N.H.S. blessed by quality coaching "in our day?"

May N.H.S. athletics be blessed with more men like that in the athletics/coaching department.  DB.

The coaches we had in Newton were insperational to me as I followed in their footsteps and coached football for 40  years as well as teaching math.   All these men were different in their apporach but all were outstanding leaders.

We should remember Jim Ronayne, Howie Ferguson,  Norm Walker and now Al Forutune and be thankful they were part of our lives.  Woody

I plan to attend his Memorial service a week from Monday. He (and a few select others) had a tremendous influence on my career path and inspired me to be the best person, teacher and coach I could be every day.
