In Memory

Stephen Carroll

Rochester: Tuesday, September 29, 2015 at age 69 at Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, NY - released from the painful clutches of mesothelioma. He was born at the New England Hospital for Women and Children, Jamaica Plain, MA on December 25, 1945. The son of Alvin (Bud) Carroll and Elizabeth Douai, Steve spent his years growing up in Natick and Newton, MA and was a graduate of Newton North High School where he was a gifted running back on the football team. He attended Parsons College, Iowa and the University of Minnesota.

Arriving in Rochester at the age of 22, Steve was an eager and dedicated member of the Rochester Zen Center and deeply immersed himself in zazen. A man of the earth, a carpenter - Steve was a maker of things. He was inspired by great writers, specifically, Henry David Thoreau and Dylan Thomas. As a young man, he spent time living between New England, Rochester, and the spiritual frontier of the Anza-Borrego Desert (CA) and the White Mountains (NH.)

Steve treasured his loving wife and companion, Shelley, of eighteen years with whom he enjoyed exploring the ocean of Southern Maine and the dunes of Cape Cod. Steve cherished watching the growth of his three children, Eben, Willa, and Bran as he witnessed their lives and paths broaden. He relished the radiant spirit of his two beautiful grandchildren, Maggie and Micah.

Steve will be remembered for his intellectual brilliance, his tenacious spirit, and his relentless courage while battling mesothelioma. He is predeceased by his father, Bud, and his sister, Kristine Diamondopoulos. He is survived by his wife, his children and grandchildren; his mother, Betty Carroll; sister Susan Carroll; and nephews Abe Carroll, and Steve and Chuck Diamondopoulos. At Steve's request, donations may be made to the Rochester Zen Center to the Abbott Fund at www.rzc.org and for mesothelioma research at: www.curemeso.org. Online Condolences welcomed at:

I go back to Frank A. Day with Steve. Many a game played at Albemarle Park, without pads. Steve was the best...as he showed later on the Newton football team. Always quiet... inward looking...guess he found himself in Zazen as his journey progressed. I wonder if we rubbed shoulders in Southern Maine, as he was raising his kids and showing them the wonder of the shore...unbeknownst  to both of us. Pissed that I let him go from my life as we went our separate ways. Only pic I could find;... ..
